The
Indiana Section PGA Pro Am, sponsored by SkyGolf and Srixon, was completed at
Rock Hollow GC in Peru, Ind. The winners of this Professional-Amateur teamed
event were Chris Brummett and Andrew Burns, both from Highland Golf and Country
Club in Indianapolis.
Assistant
Golf Professional Brummett and his amateur partner, Burns, pulled off the
perfect alliance for the best-ball, 18-hole stroke play event. Amazingly they carded
eleven birdies for the 18, and none of them overlapped.
Beginning
the round with Burns making birdie on #1 and #2, Brummett slipped in one of his
four birdies on the third. Burns quickly turned in two more for the team to go
5-under in five holes. One bogey on the par-4 ninth put them out at 32.
Not
letting the bogey change their momentum, Brummett promptly birdied the first
two holes of the second nine to go to 6-under. After Burns second shot went
long on the thirteenth hole, Brummett played it safe to the front edge of the
green. Burns could not get up and down from the long rough, and Brummett,
though hitting the putt exactly as read, missed his par for the team’s only
other bogey. Coming home, Brummett birdied the fifteenth and Burns went on
another birdie run with three in a row on the last three holes.
Burns,
with significant tournament experience, including participating in the Indiana
State Amateur Championship, USGA qualifying events (barely missing qualifying
for the US Amateur) and Highland Club Championships under his belt, considers
himself a “par shooter.” Seven birdies in a round, though unusual, is his
personal record in a “fun round, never in competition.” After the fifth birdie
for the Pro Am Brummett urged him on to tie or break his personal best. “When I
birdied #16 for the fifth I began to think I could do it,” stated Burns. “I put
it to three feet on both #17 and #18 and made the putts. I knew my putter was
hot right now.”
Brummett's
and Burns' 63 had been posted on the leader board before the entire field had
even teed off for the tournament. Brummett, calling Highland to explain that he
needed to stick around for the possible playoff instead of returning to work in
the afternoon, spent the afternoon with Burns eating and playing pool and golf
video. Returning to see their names still atop the leader board, the pair
waited until the field completed their rounds and the shouting could
begin.
Finishing in second place were Mike Wassmer,
professional at McDonald Golf Course in Evansville and his brother Kevin
Wassmer of Poseyville, winner of the 2007 Southern Open. Four teams were tied
for third place.
