Penman Finishes First - PGA
Assistant Professional Championship
Beginning the day in the lead
group and ending the day as the winner of the Adidas / Taylormade PGA
Assistants Championship Chad Penman from Sycamore Hills GC in Fort Wayne, fired
a third round 29-39—68 at Stonehenge GC in Warsaw to take the title. His round
of 68 was added to the previous two rounds of 71-69, for a 54-hole total of
208, or five better than par.
Penman began the day two back
of 54-hole leader, Joe Zimmerman of Woodland CC. Right off the block Penman
made birdies on the first two holes to tie the lead. Missing two easy putts,
but making six for birdies on the front nine, Penman looked to be on track for
the course record at Stonehenge. At the turn he was 8-under for the tournament,
and five shots ahead of his closest competitor, Matt Cardarelli from Harbour
Trees. Zimmerman turned at 1-under for the tournament after going out at 38.
Just hoping “not to die” on
the final nine holes, Penman’s tee shot on #10 found the tall heather on the
left side, but he saved par with a second shot to about 30 feet and an easy
two-putt. Missing only four greens on the day, Penman got up and down on #12
for par and narrowly missed making birdie on #13.
Claiming “This hole has my
name on it,” Penman suffered his first bogey when his tee shot found the marked
hazard left of the fairway. Electing to take the drop instead of playing it from
the hazard, he reached the par four on his third shot, and missed one of the
few putts of the day for a 5 on the hole. Penman had not scored better than
bogey the three previous times he had played the hole.
Coming to the seventeenth, par
three, Penman was 7-under for the tournament, with both Zimmerman and
Cardarelli at 1-under, His tee shot fell short into the lake and the resulting
double bogey dropped him to 5-under.
Playing smartly on the final hole, and three shots
ahead of Cardarelli who had birdied #17, Penman played an iron into the landing
area in front of the par five, pitched on and two-putted for the win. Finishing
out his apprenticeship in the Indiana Section with the Assistants Professional
Championship title, Penman will be completing his requirements for election to
full PGA Membership in November. In the meantime, he and Zimmerman and
Cardarelli will represent the Indiana Section at the PGA National Assistant
Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida, October.
