Winning the PGA Member
Division of the 2007 PGA Pepsi Indiana Championships was Alan Schulte from the
Hawthorns GC. Schulte fired a 70-70—140. The win at the Indiana Championships
came after Schulte’s recent appearance at the PGA Cup Championship held at
Reynolds Plantation in Georgia. At the PGA Cup the United States reclaimed the
title from Great Britain & Ireland, 13.5 to 12.5 points.
Edging out first round leader,
Dave Carich from The Bridgewater Club, Schulte appeared focused and ready for
the challenge after beginning the second round in second place. Carding eight
birdies for the two rounds, and four bogeys, Schulte never wavered in his
determination to win this final event of 2007.
2006 runner-up Carich, who fired a 67 in
round one, struggled with some bad breaks and bad decisions to post a 77 in
round two. The 144 total for the tournament was good enough to keep second
place, one shot ahead of Rob Knuckles, Deer Creek GC who came in at 145. Tied
for fourth place were Tim Frazier, Sycamore Hills CC, Mike O’Toole, Golf Galaxy
and Todd Smith, Rock Hollow GC at 146.
The PGA Senior Division winner
made a strong comeback for the second round. Bill Schumaker, Crooked Lake GC,
posted a 5-under 67 in the second round to force a playoff against Denny Ford,
Pleasant Run GC, for the title.
The pair, tied at 142, began the playoff on
hole #10. Schumaker was able to get up and down out of the greenside bunker for
par, while Ford needed two putts for bogey. Tied for third in the PGA Senior
Division were Jack Barber, Meridian Hills CC, and Gary Gant from Pine Valley CC
with 150 for the tournament.
Scott Pieri, Fort Wayne, won
the Amateur Division after posting 71-70—141.
He played the second round with
the mission to earn the title after birdies on five of the first six holes on
his second (the front) nine for a 33. A double on #9 and bogeys on #14 and #15
were to only blips on his radar. Pieri, who regained amateur status in March of
2006, edged out Brent Hofman of Lafayette by three shots. The pair began the
day tied for first, along with Joe Marhurin from Fishers. Finishing in third
place was Tim Cobb, also from Fishers with two rounds of 73.
Ted Kaperak, Terre Haute, who
fired the overall low score for the tournament with 69-69—138, won the Senior
Amateur Division.
Kaperak played
the second round without a bogey until the 18th hole. Finishing in
second place, Ron Carter, Monticello, posted an even par 72 to pair with his 73
from round one. Third place was a tie between Mike Bell, Indianapolis, who
posted a 70 in round two after struggling in with a 79 for round one and Jerry
Crouch, Indianapolis, also with a 149.
