May 19th 2008 - Players in the second wave of tee times at the Indiana PGA E-Z-GO
Indianapolis Open presented by Mizuno were called off the course at 3:45 p.m.
due to course conditions and will continue their opening round Tuesday, May 20th.
After play resumes and all players finish 18 holes, a cut will be made at low
60 and ties. The final round
will begin as soon as possible after the cut is made and is estimated to start
at 12:00 p.m.
Amateur Seth Fair of Brownsburg and Quinn Griffing of Fort Wayne, PGA
Professional at Donald Ross Golf Club, each shot a 4-under-par 34-34=68 to tie
for the lead at the end of the morning wave of tee times. Both players teed off
Monday, May 19, at Heartland Crossing Golf Links in Camby and avoided the day’s
afternoon rain showers.
Fair got off to a good start after a birdie
on the 525-yard, par 5 10th hole. However, a double bogey resulted
on the 168-yard, par 3 11th hole when he pushed his tee shot into
the water and was unable to get the ball up and down. Three consecutive birdies
on holes 16 through 18 allowed him to make the turn at two under. “I made a lot
of putts today; it was definitely the key to today’s round,” said Fair. “I kept
the ball in play and gave myself a lot of opportunities.”
A highlight of his round came on the
515-yard, par-5 third hole when he placed his drive in the middle of the
fairway, put a 4-iron to the right side of the green and chipped in for eagle. Fair’s
final birdie came on the par-3 fifth hole to finish with a 68.
If his score holds up, it will be
his first time holding the lead heading into the final round of an Indiana PGA
event, but he feels very comfortable playing at Heartland Crossing GL. “I have
played this course plenty of times. Tomorrow I hope to just go out and hit
solid shots and make putts again,” stated Fair, who practices with his
University of Indianapolis’ men’s team at Heartland Crossing.
Griffing’s consistency lead to his
subpar round. “I just hit the ball really well. I made a few putts, but I only
missed two greens and one fairway,” he said. “It was just one of those days
that I hit it right where I was aiming.” His on-target game produced six
birdies. Two bogeys on the fourth and 14th holes put him at four
under for the day.
Currently in third place is Ivan Foster from Fort Wayne, Professional at
Bridgewater Golf Club, with a 2-under-par 70.
Participants are competing for a
$20,000 purse and an exemption into the 2009 Indiana Open. All amateurs will
receive merchandise certificates in the golf shop.
Play will
resume at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
