April 21st 2008 - The Indiana Section PGA opened its tournament season with the Pepsi Club Car Tournament Series at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis. Brett Melton of Washington, Ind., was victorious after shooting a 5-under-par 66 in the one-day, stroke-play event. “I always like to get the season off to a good start and especially when this weather has made it so tough to practice,” said Melton. “I have been hitting balls for however long I can stand it in the cold and putting in the basement of my home.” Despite the cold and wet conditions that have plagued golf in Indiana this spring and limited practice time, it didn’t seem have an effect on Melton’s play. After starting with a birdie on the first hole, making another on the fourth, and carding three consecutive birdies on holes six through eight for a 5-under-par 31 on the front nine, he held on to shoot an even-par 35 on the back nine. “After eight I scrambled,” he said. His approach shot on nine landed in the water, but he got the ball up and down to save par. After burying his ball in the greenside bunker on the par-3 15th hole, he managed to make a 20-foot putt for par. Melton noted his success with putting, and credited the condition of the greens with his ability to score well. “The greens were rolling great. If you got it on line you were in good shape. Meridian Hills is a great track, and it’s in really good shape for this time of year.” He also made it easier on himself by hitting 15 of the 18 greens i n regulation. “I hit a lot of greens, and my only bogey of the day was when I missed right of the green on hole 17 where I left myself a tough chip shot.” His subpar round prevailed over 95 of Indiana’s top PGA Professionals. It was only Melton’s second competitive round at Meridian Hills C.C., but lack of experience on this particular course was overcome by his competitive attitude. When asked what his goals were for this first Section event of the year, he confidently stated, “You should only have one goal every tournament you enter. And that’s to win.” Aaron Harrell of Fort Wayne Country Club and Brad Fellers of Swan Lake Golf Resort tied for second after shooting 68. This was Harrell’s first event as a professional. Fellers won in 2005 when the event was also hosted at Meridian Hills C.C. after defeating Jim Ferriell of Crooked Stick Golf Club in a playoff. Ferriell captured the 60 years-of-age and over Super Senior division this year with a round of 74. The Senior division win for players age 50 and older, was split by Bill Schumaker of Crooked Lake Golf Course and Dave Fleming of Otte Golf Center who each shot 71. The next Pepsi Club Car Series event will be held June 16th at The Trophy Club in Lebanon.
