April 16th 2007 - Only two participants in the 2007 Callaway/Mobile Proshop Southern Open Championship were able to match par of the Victoria National Golf Course in Newburgh, Indiana, and both are amateurs.
Paul Gentry of Evansville and Kevin Wassmer of Poseyville, were the two who managed to play par golf while enduring harsh conditions that included cold and steady winds. Gentry led in the clubhouse after the first wave of tee times, and had to wait until nearly the end of the day when Wassmer matched his par score.
The sudden-death playoff began on the par 5, tenth hole as a race against the dark. Gentry's tee shot landed in a left-side bunker. Wassmer's tee shot faded right into the tall fieldgrass, under a tree. After debating an unplayable lie, Wassmer was able to punch, about 30 yards into the fairway.
Gentry placed his second shot into the fairway and then chipped on to the green in regulation. Wassmer's third fell short, but a chip to about 10 feet gave him the opportunity to hole the putt and halve the hole when Gentry two-putted.
On the 11th hole, a 196 yard, par 3, Wassmer knocked his tee shot on to the green while Gentry's fell short. Unable to make the long birdie putt, with Gentry within 7 feet in two, Wassmer settled for par and anticipated another play-off hole. However, Gentry missed the putt, for a bogey, giving Wassmer the title.
Finishing tied for third place were PGA Professionals Denny Hepler, Racoon Run, Brad Fellers of Swan Lake, and Matt Holda of Golf Source right behind with scores of 1-over 73. Holda carded the only eagle of the day with a hole-in-one of the 11th.
Tied for sixth place were Cary Hungate, Kokomo CC, Randy Nichols of Connersville, and Quinn Griffing of Sycamore GC with 2-over scores of 74. The remainder of the results, and tournament photos, may be found through the BlueGolf Leaderboard below.
