Andy Anderson, PGA
Professional from Brook Hill Golf Course and Chad Ayres, PGA Professional out
of Hillcrest Golf & Country Club, teamed it up to post 17-under par in the
two-day, best ball format team championship held at Kokomo Country Club.
The pair began the day one
shot back of the first round leaders with 8-better than par. Ayres made birdie
out the gate with a 3 on the first hole.
They coasted with pars until
#5 when they carded a trio of birdies on #5, #6 and #7. The birdie on #6 came
after Ayres drive trickled over the hill and stopped on the side hill. A
sand wedge from the tough lie, through the sycamore tree leaves, ended about one
foot from the hole for the birdie putt.
Another trio of birdies from
Anderson’s hot putter on #11, #12 and #13 put the Ayres/Anderson team at
15-under and in the lead with a logjam at 14-under by four other teams. The
“best hole” of the day was actually two holes, according to Ayres. That being
the back-to-back birdies on #15 and #16 that put the team into the outright
lead at 17-under. Steady pars coming in gave them the title. Last year the same
Ayres/Anderson team finished this event in a sixth place tie.
Out of the log jam at 14-under
emerged the team of Quinn Griffing, PGA Professional from The Donald Ross Club
and Eric Johnson, PGA Professional out of Dick's Sporting Goods. The pair
closed to within one shot after an eagle on #11 put them at 13-under. Finishing
with back-to-back birdies on #17 and #18 brought them home with 16 better than
par and second place alone.
