CHAD PENMAN CLAIMS FIRST SECTION VICTORY
SELLERSBURG, Ind. – Chad Penman, assistant golf professional at Sycamore Hills CC in Ft. Wayne, won the Rapport Shafts Southern Open at Covered Bridge GC on Monday. Claiming his first section victory since turning pro in 2002.
He fired a 4-under-par 68 to beat Jon Stutz, head golf professional at Purgatory GC in Noblesville and Cary Hungate, head golf professional at Kokomo CC, both by only one shot.
Penman opened his round on the back nine with one bogey, five pars and three birdies. He birdied the par-3 third, par-5 fifth that plays as the hardest hole on the course, and the par-4 sixth to finish his first nine holes with a 2-under-par 34.
Penman finished his round on the front nine with consistency, scoring one bogey, five pars and three birdies. He birdied the par-4 eleventh, par-3 twelfth and the par-5 eighteenth to finish his round with a 4-under-par 68.
Penman who hasn’t had much time to practice this year, with the less than spring-like temperatures, was very pleased with his round, “I wanted to hit greens and make putts and that’s what I did” he said. When asked if he had a game plan for Monday’s round he sarcastically said, “to make the least amount of strokes on each hole”. Needless to say he was in great spirits after his terrific round of 4-under-par.
Stutz opened his round with one bogey, five pars and three birdies on the front. He birdied the par-4 second, par-3 third and the par-4 sixth to come in with a 2-under-par 34. On the back nine he had two bogies, four pars and three birdies. He birdied the par-4 thirteenth, the par-5 fourteenth and the par-5 eighteenth to finish with a 3-under-par 69 for the tournament.
Hungate opened his round with three birdies on the front nine. He birdied the par-4 second, par-5 fifth and the par-3 eighth to score a 3-under-par 33. On the back nine he had nine straight pars to finish with a 3-under-par 69 for the tournament.
Bob Placido, head golf professional at Augusta Hills GC in Albion, shot an even-par 72 to finish as low senior. Cliff Harris, from Carmel, shot a 1-under-par 71 to finish as low amateur.
