ALAN SCHULTE OPENS ’04 WITH VICTORY
COLUMBUS, Ind. – Alan Schulte of the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club fired a 5-under-par 67 at Otter Creek Golf Course here to win the Indiana PGA’s season opening event, the first of three Pepsi / Club Car Tournament Series events.
Schulte, who has won the last two Pepsi Indiana PGA Player of the Year awards, was two shots clear of runner-up Denny Hepler of Raccoon Run Golf Course in Warsaw.
He began his round on the back nine and after a birdie at the short par-4 eleventh, he dropped back to even par with a bogey at 12.
A birdie at the reachable par-5 fourteenth got Schulte back to red numbers and he added to his total by wrapping up his opening nine with birdies at 17 and 18.
He added a third consecutive birdie at the par-5 first to get to minus-4. His final birdie of the day came at the par-4 seventh hole.
Hepler, who was inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame last November, opened on the front nine and got off to a quick start with a birdie at the first. He would give that shot back with a bogey at the sixth. He made par on the other seven holes on his outward nine to turn at level par.
After starting the back nine with four straight pars, Hepler quickly got his score to minus-2 with an eagle, three, at the par-5 fourteenth. He would go onto add a birdie at 17 to finish at 69, good enough for a second place finish.
Four players fired rounds of 2-under-par 70 to tie for third place. They included Jim Ousley of Tippecanoe CC in Monticello, Mat Blair of Michigan City GC, Brent Nicoson of Royal Oak CC in Greenwood and John Messner of Oak Golf GC in Oxford.
Messner’s round was also good enough to capture the Golf For Living/Cialis Senior Tour portion of the event. He beat defending Pepsi Senior Player of the Year Bill Schumaker of Crooked Lake Golf Course in Columbia City by two shots.
