ALAN SCHULTE WINS 2nd STRAIGHT PGA EVENT
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Alan Schulte, the head golf professional at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, won the Indiana PGA Southern Open at Evansville Country Club on Monday, his second consecutive victory to start the 2004 tournament season.
He fired a 6-under-par 65 to beat Mike Nakai, an assistant professional at the Country Club of Terre Haute, by three shots.
Schulte opened with a birdie at the par-4 first hole, but then made five straight birdies to remain at minus-1.
He turned it on over the final three holes, however, with birdies at each hole for a front nine 4-under-par 30.
His back nine began with five straight pars and then he made birdie at the par-4 fifteenth, which played as the most difficult hole on the golf course, averaging more than one stroke over par.
Schulte then made birdie at the eighteenth to finish up his round
Nakai began his round on the back nine and opened with birdies at the first two holes. After a bogey at the twelfth, he bounced back with birdies at holes 14 and 15 to get to minus-3.
He added his fifth birdie of the day at the long, 201-yard, par-3 sixteenth hole to move to 4-under on the day. He closed out his first nine with a par at seventeen and yet another birdie at the par-4 eighteenth.
He gave a couple shots back on the front nine, making three bogies and a birdie to shoot a 2-over-par 36 on the front.
He made bogey at the second, a short par-4 and the fourth, a par-4 measuring just more than 400 yards. His lone birdie on the front came at the seventh. He gave that right back, however, with a bogey at the par-5 eighth.
Nakai closed out his round with a par at the par-3 ninth for a round of 68 on the par-71 layout, two shots better than the field.
Jim Ferriell, the former PGA Professional at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, fired an even par round of 71 to finish as the low senior in the Golf For Living Senior Tour portion of the event.
Steve Hale of Michigan City fired a 1-under-par 70 to finish as the low amateur in the event.
