The PGA Pepsi / Club Car Tournament Series #2 was completed at Sultan’s Run Golf Course in Jasper, Ind. Winning the event was Ricky Jones, assistant professional at The Woodstock Club, with a score of 69 on the 6,931 yard course.

The Tournament Series #2 win was the first Indiana Section PGA win for Jones. “I’ve shot under par lots, but this is the first time in a tournament,” stated Jones. Having not seen the course before his 3-under round, Jones thought the greens were “a little slow, but once you get used to them they were fine.”

Jones, who began the tournament from the 10th tee, took a bogey on the first hole and a double on the par-three third hole. He was able to birdie the second and seventeenth to go out with 37. After another birdie on his eleventh hole (#2), the highlight of the round came with a string of four birdies on #14, #15, #16 and #17. On the par–4, 18th hole, Jones was able to hold on to the lead and the win after actually “hitting three tee shots on the last hole.” He was able to abandon the two provisional balls when he located his first tee shot, then two putted for bogey to finish 3-under.

Until Jones’ 69, the lead was shared by Quinn Griffing, McDonald Golf Course, Jason Calhoun, IU and Fred Mattingly, Dick’s Sporting Goods with 71s. Mattingly and Calhoun also had not previously played Sultan’s Run. According to Mattingly, “Sometimes it’s better not to know where the trouble is so you can just hit your shots.” Griffing’s caddy commented that Griffing was striking the ball well, but would “get one and give one back.” “The killer for him (Griffing) was a double on the fourth hole when he got a bit aggressive going for the par fine in two and went over the back of the green.”

Tied for fifth place were Matthew Carderelli from Harbour Trees GC, Mike O’Toole from Golf Galaxy, Rob Knuckles from Deer Creek GC, Bob Rothgeb from Rock Hollow GC, Denny Ford from Pleasant Run GC and Jeff Sanders from Sultan’s Run. Winning the Argosy Senior Tour portion of the event were Denny Ford and Bob Rothgeb.
